Let me put it out there plainly. It is a scam. You don’t need the $400 or whatever regimen of shots. You don’t need to stick yourself every day in hopes of surviving the 500 calorie diet that you go on for this program. It’s the 500 calorie diet that causing you to lose weight, not the HCG. And trust me, the HCG does NOT do ANYTHING for your hunger. Let me explain.
What is HCG? HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin and it is a hormone that is found in pregnant women. The story goes (which I fell for more than once) that this hormone is what triggers a pregnant woman to break down stored fat to help her body get the nutrient support it needs for the growth of a baby. They also like to tell you that this hormone also keeps you feeling full and not hungry even though you’re not eating enough calories for two people.
The idea is you’re going to take this hormone either by drops or more popular by injection, and that is going to help you with the second part of the diet — 500 calories a day. This HCG is going to make it so you can eat just 500 calories a day, and never be hungry!

There have been studies done where some people were given a placebo and others were given actual real HCG and the same results of “hunger reduction” was reported. Some people may benefit from the idea that “they are not going to be hungry” but the actual hormone doesn’t do anything. I can tell you this from personal experience.
I have done about 4 rounds of HCG. I had success on all in losing weight, but you can do that quite well eating only 500 calories and let me tell you that I did not feel less hungry on any of them. Then my final clue that this was all just smoke and mirrors is when I did my last round back in March. I lost 18 pounds, I will say that, but I was eating 500 calories so, you know. Duh!
The thing was I misread the instructions on the HCG vial. I was supposed to be taking 20 units every day but I thought I was supposed to take 5 units and that’s what I took. I was the same amount of hungry as I was when I had done the rounds (years) before and taken presumably the right dose. So I knew right then and there, I didn’t need HCG. I could do this 500 calorie on my own, haha. But really, that is very hard.
The best thing about this program though, IS the diet. It’s a great “detox” approach and you WILL lose weight eating 500 calories a day, but I have found great success following the eating plan at 1000-1200 calories a day instead. I was losing about a 1.5-3 pounds a week that way.
I highly recommend that you skip the HCG diet. But I do recommend if you’re trying to lose weight, maintain weight, and/or just want to feel better, you do a detox diet and start addressing food issues. I will talk about that a little later in this series. But let’s go back to my weight loss story.
After that round of HCG which took me from 204 lbs down to about 186lbs, I had 36 more pounds to go. My goal weight was 150, which believe it or not, is a good weight for how I like to look. Does BMI still say I am overweight? Yes. Does the doctor? Absolutely. Do I care? Not at all. I like how I look at that weight so that is my goal. But here I was at 186 lbs and knowing that HCG was lies. What was I going to do?
